Monica Sakolsky
Co-owner/Studio Manager
Monica has been an integral part of the studio since it’s earliest
beginnings in 2000 and it’s business incorporation in April 2002.
Working alongside her husband, Ira, she has played a pivotal role in shaping,
nurturing and growing Riverway Studio. In her position as Manager, Monica
oversees all aspects of the business as well as lending artistic support
to all projects.
Her former activities include assisting in the management and production
of fundraising events for Healing Hearts Through the Arts, a not-for-profit
organization which provided funding and creative arts therapy programs
for hospices. She co-produced The Monster Mash Bashes and Ubaka Hill Concert
for this organization. She also played keyboard in the Healing Hearts
Club Band, which played for charitable events including the American Cancer
Society’s Cancer Walk. Monica is a two-time breast cancer survivor
and is currently writing a book about her experience with cancer.
Monica was the House Manager for C.O.D. (Comedy On Demand) shows at the
Iron Chef in Essex, CT, Cherrystones Restaurant in Lyme, CT, and Foxwoods
Resort Casino in Uncasville, CT. She also served as sound technician and
stage manager for TwoMenOneManShow at the Village Gallery and
the Ivoryton Playhouse, and My Big Fat Freak Wedding at La Vita
Gustosa Restaurant in East Haddam, CT.
She currently co-produces and is booking agent for Riverway Studio’s
Improvisational Comedy Theatre shows, including ‘Etch ‘n Sketch’
and ‘Follygiggin’.
Monica’s other career interests include work as a certified American
Sign Language (ASL) interpreter and teacher. Monica spent five years at
The National Theatre of the Deaf, where she served as Interpreter, Assistant
Director of Outreach and Public Relations Assistant. Monica has also taught
at the American School for the Deaf and York Correctional Institute through
a volunteer program. Since 1995, she has worked as an educational interpreter,
as well as a freelance interpreter for individuals and corporations. Her
formal education includes Northwestern Connecticut Community College,
where she received high honors and a certification in Deaf Studies, the
Bicultural Center in Maryland and workshops under the auspices of Gallaudet
University.
Monica is an ardent animal lover and served as volunteer for High Hopes
Therapeutic Riding Center. She enjoys horseback and motorcycle riding
as well as gardening.
